In Maren & I, Italian artist Giuseppe Bonifati recounts an unexpected love story with a statue. “Maren is not exactly my type. I usually fall for brunettes. Blond girls are new to me.” Giuseppe meets Maren for the first time. Few words are exchanged, yet a bond forms instantly—visible, undeniable. Their relationship unfolds without explanation, carried by gestures, glances, and shared presence. Love, here, does not need language. Structured in ten chapters, the experimental film follows the couple through a series of episodes that blur the line between intimacy and performance: journeys, encounters, and moments that resemble secular rituals and religious pilgrimages. As their affection deepens, another tension emerges—between love and art. Because love, like artistic creation, is ultimately a solitary pursuit.
The Italian sculptor Antonella Diana created the copy of Maren; she is hardly distinguishable from the original statue by Alberto Giacometti – Woman on Cart in bronze, informally named Maren and which is exhibited since 1966 in the Old Town Hall Square in Holstebro.
